GoodGuys in Nashville

KARC members Mike Smith, Perry Stapleton, and Buckshot Elliott cruised to Nashville, TN for the June 27-29 Good Guys Event.  They were joined by Newport’s BC Waters, and four other rodders who cruised down together, and enjoyed a tour of Advanced Plating of Nashville.  Mike reports they had good weather and had the unexpected good fortune of going to the Opry while Earl Scruggs was performing. The event drew 1500 plus good guys, which was considered good considering fuel prices and the prediction of bad weather.

Greeneville Show

Jim Collier made the local Greeneville show, and reported they had a turnout of about 250, very similar to our show. This show was also on the weekend of June 28th. There were also a few more KARC members who made the show.

Studebakers at Bristol Speedway

I (Sid) attended this show.  It was held by the East TN Chapter of the National Studebaker Drivers club to celebrate their 30th anniversary as a Chapter. This show was also held on the 28th of June, making this a busy weekend for East TN. I did not get an official count but there were 60-70 cars present.  Considering the show was only open to Studes and Packards, fuel prices, etc., that was a decent turnout.  Also the Kingsport Times News had the location listed incorrectly, and at least 1 ex NSRA Rep went there and never did find the show. Who is the ex Rep who owns a Packard? The highlight for me was 5 laps around the track in my 54 Stude.  By lagging way behind the Pace car, there was ample space to go as fast as my butt would allow me.  Nuff said!!! I would like to say hat’s off to a small local club that was able to pull off renting the BMR, and putting on a nice, well organized show.

Moonshine Run

On the weekend of June 20-21, The Hard Times Rod Club of Newport, TN held an outstanding event. They were celebrating their 25th Moonshine Run, and had just over 500 entries.  With the excellent location of the City Park, they attracted entries from several adjoining states.  The entries were also top-notch, with many I had never seen before.  Several old bootlegger machines were at the show. A 40 Ford Sedan that still had the 1955 Caddy 2-4 barreled engine, that was installed in 1955 to outrun the locals of the time. KARC members Mike Smith, Jerry Collins, Norman Davis, and I (Sid) made the trip. This was considerably fewer than usual, as we have won the Club Participation Award in the past. All in all, a very good run.

Wings and Wheels

The Wings and Wheels, Fly in, Cruise-in, probably falls under up-coming events, but since we had a pretty good response at the last meeting when I mentioned this, I thought it deserved a mention. This is coming up July 26th, at the Virginia Highlands Airport in Abingdon, VA. The Show/Cruise in will feature Vintage Aircraft, and Rods, Customs, Antique, Muscle cars, etc.  Seems like a novel idea, and it’s free to registrants.  All donations will go to the Abingdon Kiwanis Club, with most of that going to Children’s Charities. With Abingdon being relatively close, this would seem to have the possibilities of a Club Cruise.  I don’t know of any other local shows that weekend. They would like everyone to pre-register, but is not absolutely necessary.  They only have space for 125 cars.

Grant Money

Wal Mart Cruise in and Wilderness Trail Run/show Chairman Mike Smith reports we did get grant money from the TN Dept. of Tourism.  There were significant more applicants this year; therefore the money passed out to each one was less.  We are grateful for anything we get, and for Mike’s efforts in paper work, etc., which has to be filled out each year in order to be considered for the grant money.

Leonard Dotson

Most of our members know that member Fred Dotson’s son; Leonard had a serious motorcycle accident in early May. The good news is that Leonard has made better than expected progress, and was able to leave re-hab and go home, with help of friends and family.  While Leonard has made considerable progress, he has weeks or months of re-hab ahead. There is a Leonard Dotson fund set up at motorcycle dealership in Bristol, but I do not know the name or details at this time.  We will try to have this info by club meeting time, and also list it on our Club Website.

Member Machines and Gossip

Jim and Debbie Bledsoe have just moved into their new house and Debbie “insisted” that Jim go ahead and build his 2000 sq ft garage. Rumor has it that leather chairs and marble floors will adorn this brick walled and gated entrance garage! Jim has also purchased a  new drive-on lift, one that has been advertised for a few weeks in the Times News.  The seller, Jerry Smith, our old contact at Advance Stores, had 2 or 3 left as of this writing. The lift came with extra hardware to set vehicle on jack stands, etc., and was rated at 10,000 lbs.

The Prez.  Dick Cartwright was recently pulled over by local law enforcement, for having an illegal license plate.  He was displaying an original 1961 plate on the back of his 61 bubble top Impala. Dick said he gave them a copy of the letter from the State of TN, which details the legality of running a plate of the same year as your car, as long as all other paper work is legal and up to date.  Dick said once the 2 officers reviewed this, he was OK’d, and allowed to go.  The officers were very cordial, and professional. We may need to put a copy of this on our Web Site, although it only applies to TN, it could help out someone, including Club Members.

Ronald McDonald House

Treasurer Jim Collier and Mike Smith have setup a date of July 15th, to present our donation to the Ronald McDonald house in Johnson City, TN. The plan is to meet at Meadowview Convention Center at 6 PM, and cruise over for the presentation.  Any and all members are invited to go, and take a look at the facility at the same time.

2008 Dues

The 2008 KARC membership dues, are now due, and Tres. Jim Collier will be happy to take your $20.
