Wal-Mart Supercruise and Wilderness Trail Car Show

Our annual Wal-Mart Supercruise fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House was another rousing success.  We had $1200 plus in donations with Wal- Mart matching up to $1000, and the Hot Dog Trailer taking in  several hundred dollars, all going to The Ronald McDonald House. The new KARC trailer made its debut, and worked out very well for our purposes.  Those new speakers on the KARC Boom Box also were doing the job. My count unofficially was 300 participants, not counting club cars.  Parking was as usual tight, and a little hectic, but all worked out OK, other than several would be participants could not find parking inside our allotted space. I noticed some of our newer members taking part in the work load and that’s a good thing.

The Wilderness Trail Run/show was also another success, with a new entry record of 249. Things had slowed down a little in the afternoon, but we had a late surge of participants. Several of the late comers had left that large show from down the road. The crowd seemed to be content with the music, the weather, and the show in general. Mikel Smith was awarded the “Buck Doran Memorial Award”, given out by D&D Rod and Custom of Church Hill, TN.  This has been a nice addition to our show, and many thanks to Bucky and Leon for their participation. The award is in honor of  Bucky’s late dad, Buck Doran, an original pioneer of racing, early street rodding in the area and member of our club with his big block Stude. Our success is in large part due to Mike’s hard work and organizational skills. Several other members had a large hand, but I’ll let Mike talk about that. I did notice hard working 50/50 people at both Wal- Mart and downtown. There was really good participation manning the “gates”, with no one having to stay too long,  (I hope).  The new system taking up money at the gates seemed to work well also. Special Thanks to our Major Sponsors: Wal-Mart, John’s Auto Sales and Rainbow Motors.

Condolences

Our club extends our condolences to the family of club member Buddy Jones who passed away on May 10, with the funeral being held on May the 13th.  I am sure the Armstrong Garage Gang is just not the same without Buddy.

Member Machines and Gossip

Glen Armstrong’s 47 Lincoln Continental is coming along nicely and only lacks paint. The big Princely Lincoln is running a 429 Ford engine, with an 80’s Jaguar front suspension, the interior is already finished with seats out of a late Chrysler 300.  The stock rear seat was also covered with the material out of the Chrysler. Glen’s work looks top notch as usual.

Bruce Roberts has opted for a new set of front coil springs for his Chrysler Wagon.

Keith Owens is still going Chrome City with his Pontiac.

Charlie Ball removed the front suspension from his 51 Ford PU, 6 weeks ago, and is pondering installing his new Southern Rods  M11 suspension.

I (Sid) just did a 255,000 mile check on the Ole 41, including trans. filter, and front and rear trans seals.

Mike Smith’s 68 Cutlass Convertible has the newly rebuilt engine back in and running, with freshly installed  new  brake system from fire firewall to rear,   and new  2” dropped  front spindles.

Fred Dotson’s 56 Ford 2 dr. is running again after an engine overhaul.

There’s probably plenty more happening. Let us know.
