East Tn. NSRA Appreciation Day

Close to 60 cars showed up for the Annual NSRA Appreciation Day at Ketron Middle School football field on Saturday, April 26 hosted by East TN. NSRA rep Ray Presnell. This is typically the first outing of the year in this area  for a lot of new cars and members. What started out as a dark and cloudy day turned into a nice day, until the early afternoon threat of storms and rain, caused the event to end earlier than planned. Most of the cars had their annual safety inspections by the NSRA inspectors prior to making the trip to the Nat’s South the next weekend. Greg Lewis was the recipient of the Safety Award and Harry Bishop was presented the NSRA Merit Award. Many door prizes were also given out during the day. Somehow KARC member Bill (Dipstick) Hurd wound up with so much of the cleaning supplies and wax given out that he has volunteered to clean everyone’s car that makes the trip to Knoxville. Proceeds from the concession stand and 50/50 pot were donated to the Bloomingdale Raiders County football team. Jim Davis served as the Certified Master Grill Chef!! He probably will not want to see another hot dog or hamburger until next year! Rumor has it that next year, this will be a Friday night and Saturday event---stayed tuned for details!

Member Machines and Gossip

Paul Bishop has bought a ’65 Chevy factory crew cab pickup, only 20 were built with this now common feature. Plans are for small block Chevy power with 700r4 trans on air ride suspension.

David Bishop is working on a ’59 Rambler  2-door wagon. Plans for this include a S-10 chassis with 350/350 turbo combo. He calls it a mini nomad.

Jerry Collins has updated his ’32 Ford with a new crate 350.

Norman Davis has his ’31 Stude on the road! It was showing only 71 miles on it a day or two  before the Appreciation Day show when I saw it at his shop. The trip to Knoxville will rack up several hundred miles as he is planning on driving back and forth all three days.

Wal-Mart  Supercruise and Wilderness Trail Car Show Update

We have new Major Sponsors for this year’s show!!! John’s Auto Sales and Rainbow Motors. We certainly appreciate their support for us and hope we in return can draw some business to their respective sales lots. We also have a band lined up for our Downtown Show at the Historic Train Station. It’s the P.F.Flyers. They are an oldies rock and roll band that formed just over 2 years ago. Band members include Ronnie Smith, Mike Warner, Bill Dishner, Joe Ball, Jim Dale, Bill Salyer, and Ron Worrell. Ronnie Smith and Ron Worrell played in a band during their college days at Milligan in the ‘60s. Ron Worrell decided to get a band together in 2006 to play for his 40th high school reunion. He called Ronnie and they started putting musicians together. Jim Dale had played in Ronnie’s Uptown Country Band for 20 years, so he joined in. Both Ronnie and Jim knew of other local musicians and soon Mike Warner and Joe Ball were on board. The most recent additions are Bill Dishner and Bill Salyer. After they played the high school reunion in 2006, word got around and they started getting calls to do other reunions and clubs in the tricities area. Ron said there was a need for an oldies band and they are having a ball! Several of our club members have heard them and say they are great!

Northeast State Car Show

April 18th was a nice sunny comfortable day for the Northeast State Cruise Show.  There were 35-40 cars present, with the KARC having the majority with 21 cars.  That’s a really good effort on the part of our club, for a good cause. We were able to take a tour of the state of the art machine shop, and observe an asphalt round track race car being run in on the chassis dyno. The race car was mostly built in-house by students and their instructor Ernie Morelock.  Nice job by all.

The following photo depicts R.D. Cartwright doing a short dissertation on the methodology involved in checking engine oil with the tried and true “dipstick” method.  Student Billy Hurd seems disinterested and distrustful.

One member, unnamed, I think he lives in Hawkins County, showed up for show at 1:30pm instead of 9:00am as rest of the guys----different time zone I guess.
