KARC 35th Anniversary

NSRA Nationals

Several KARC and area rodders attended this years NSRA Nationals in Louisville, KY on August 6 thru10th.  There were reported over 11,000 entries this year, which was an increase over last years 10,000 plus entries. The big announcement this year, which was done at NSRA Street Rod Giveaway program, was of the upcoming rule change in 2010.  That is the floating 30 year old eligibility rule, allowing all cars of that age to be admitted to all NSRA events. I have been told there was a near riot inside the stadium upon that announcement, and took a few minutes to calm down participants, so the rod could be given away.  I’m sure we will be hearing much more in the coming months, and years. You can express your opinion to your local or regional reps. They will be pleased to hear it.

FOP Broad Street Cruise

The annual FOP Broad Street Cruise and car show was held on Aug. 15th, with entries over 250. Their use of part of Broad Street does give more room to the Main Street area, but I don’t know if that’s anything for us to consider for the future. There was another engine giveaway, won last year by fellow club member, Daris Hartsock. I think it was the same engine, sold back to the FOP. I think Harold Gilreath reported this was the first year that Walker Radiator did not donate a radiator for the show. Club member Bruce Roberts was picked as the “Best Mopar”, and Norman Davis was selected as the “Odd Rod” pick.  Odd Rod means not a Ford, Chevy, or Chrysler product.

Club Picnic

The KARC annual picnic has been rescheduled for Sunday Sept. 27th. There was erroneous info at the last meeting regarding Jim Wade’s picnic. Not to mention names, but if anyone knows who had the incorrect info, feel free to complain to them at the September meeting. Details of the Club Picnic will be discussed at the September meeting.

Members Machines and Gossip

Picture from Randy and Buckshot’s trip to Ireland. Think they may have been sipping some Irish Ale?

Bruce Roberts has added another rod to his collection. He bought Jim Collier’s 35 Ford pickup after last month’s meeting. He says it’s going to be his daily driver.  I am told the negotiations lasted for several hours, and at one point a mediator had to be called in, but as far as anyone knows, Bruce and Jim remain friends.

Our buddy and long time NSRA Safety Rep. Norman Davis, had his business, Norman’s Garage selected to the recent Times News Readers Survey, as the #2 pick of all Times News Readers. I personally have never heard of the #1 pick. Norman told me he wasn’t even aware of it until a Times News Rep came to tell him. Norman, till this day, has never run an advertisement of any kind.  I guess we should give Jim Davis (Norman’s son) a little credit on that pick too, eh, Norman. Congrats to both of them. Also noticed Norman’s 31 Studebaker will be on this year’s Allandale T Shirt.

Resident artist (if he is in the mood), club member and friend Jim Caswell (The Cas) had a nice write-up in the Thursday Aug. l8th  issue of the Kpt. Times News.  A large picture on the front page and an even larger picture on the front page of Section B.  Seems the Cas had painted two Bald Eagles on the then Surgoinsville High School basketball court floor back in 1971.  The floor was being refurbished this year, and luckily they were able to track down the elusive Cas Man, and commission him to do another rendition.  This time there was to be one massive 14 foot tall Bald Eagle painted at center court.  Typical Cas said:  “This will be one bad bird”.  Nice to see the Cas get a little print.

John Stolz’s 38 Chevy 2 door flatback Chevy is out of the Dean Pilkenton Shop, and is now residing at a KARC members shop.  The Chevy had some extensive metal work accomplished at Dean’s place. Chopped top (looks nice),  flush mounted and laid back  windshield and door posts, suicide doors, all seams filled including fenders to body, running boards to body, grille shell to body, frenched tail lights, and  license plate housing.  Also had a Heidt’s M11 type front suspension installed, and a Heidt’s independent rear suspension installed.  Said KARC member and co-hort (a 50 Chevy PU expert) are to finish body and paint and ???, while also working on a 50 Chevy PU.

Jack Johnson’s 40 Ford convertible is now painted and needs reassembly. This piece of history needs some asphalt time.  Jack, --DO YOU NEED ANY HELP?????

Jacks’ body work and  paint man has now turned his attention to Perry Stapleton’s 40 Ford Sedan. It is already partially disassembled and the dust is flying. This young man told me (Sid) he received his training at WYO Tech, which is a very  well known technical school specializing in  various automotive endeavors.

Mike Smith’ 39 Chevy  has been sent  to a new home in Texas. His 68 Olds Cutlass convertible is now painted, and needs some final assembly. Mikes 36 DeSoto is still listed on our website classifieds, and is also advertised on HotRod Hot Line website, under the classifieds.

Rumor has it that ex Prez Dick Cartwright dropped a large amount of change at R&D in Elizabethton. Besides doing chrome plating, they are also a Danchuk dealer, and a dealer for several other automotive restoration type businesses. The dropped change was for items for Dick’s 55 Chev, 2 dr. sedan.

Charlie Ball is making some baby step progress on his 51 Ford PU.  A good buy on a front suspension system has now grown into engine, trans, air, steering column, brakes, new seat, gauges, new bed etc.  Beware those easy upgrades.
