Year XXXVI

HAPPY HOT ROD NEW YEAR!!!

2009 Christmas Party

As you probably know by now there was severe weather during the time our annual Xmas party was scheduled.  Only three people showed up, however there was plenty of food for those three persons. Seriously, the party had to be cancelled, so by executive decree we will have a spirited discussion at the January meeting, as to our alternatives. We can have another party, cancel till next year, or perhaps another good idea will surface.

2010 New Officers

OK, so there’s only two new officers, one of those being the Presidential office filled by Mr. Bud Barrett, who ascended onto the Throne after serving as Vice President for the 2009 year.  Anyone attending the Dec. meeting will remember there were several nominations, and self rejections for the office of Vice President. After much moaning and whining from aforementioned self rejections, Dick Cartwright bravely and reluctantly raised his right hand and went forth where no other KARC member has tread in the past. That being the possibility of becoming our first two term President. (Since the VP generally ascends to the office of President.) It was reported that Dick quipped  that he had actually had fun, in his first term as The Prez. Way to step up Mr. Dick.

Jim Collier will remain as Treasurer, and Ron Gott has consented to remain as Secretary.  Thanks to all who help make the KARC what it is!!!

KARC 2010 Contributions.

At the December 09 meeting, Keith Owens motioned that we donate $500 to the “Toys for Tots” program going on for needy children  during  the Xmas season.  The motion was quickly carried as most of our charitable motions are.

2010 Junkyard Classic Calendars

The popular Dale Klee Junkyard Classic calendars, 2010 version, have arrived for members and our advertisers/sponsors.  Mike Smith will bring them to the January meeting. We have lost a few sponsors, and are awaiting word for a major sponsor, so anyone with contacts, now is the time to be checking into any prospects. Also as everyone knows by now, we have for sure lost Wal-Mart as our Super Cruise sponsor.  Anyone with ideas or contacts for a replacement for Wal-Mart we can discuss at the January meeting. Jim Caswell,(The Cas) has gotten pictures for T shirts and flyer art work.  He is undoubtedly in serious deliberation for  his next Wilderness Trail collectible.

Gray Swap Meet

This year’s edition of “The Great Freeze-Out” swap meet will be coming up January 29-31 at the Gray Fairgrounds, in Gray TN. For die-hards like most KARC members appear to be, this meet helps alleviate a little of that cabin fever, experienced during the winter months. If you haven’t been, several of the vendors are indoors, with the main building housing 30 or so vendors. Dick Cartwright requests all members to stop by his booth with cash in hand.  He may be in a dealing kind of mood.

Members Machines and Gossip

After selling his award winning 39 Buick Convertible to Mikel Smith, Mack Armstrong found he was bored and began thinking of another project. Lo and behold, another KARC member (Perry Stapleton) had a nice start on a 40 Buick coupe street rod, and a deal was sealed. The Buick was supposed to arrive on the Friday of the “BIG SNOW”.  I assume it did.

Rex Vance’s 67 GTO is getting a fresh paint job from one of our advertiser/sponsors, Paint by Darrell.  Also, I think Rex had his engine freshened up last fall, as in a complete rebuild.  Had a good hefty sound to it.

Keith Owens, who keeps our web site up to date, including inserting the KARC N letter, has found time to install a Dakota Digital cruise control.  While he was feeling industrious he fabricated a fan shroud.  Earlier in 09 Keith had built a muscular 383 inch Chevy engine, dolled up under the hood a little, and generally freshened it up.  When you drive them, after a few years they will need some attention just like the family vehicle.

Speedway Upholstery (another advertiser) now has possession of Mike Smith’s 68 442 Olds convertible. After it comes back from Speedway Mike plans to pull the rear end and gas tank, clean it up nice under there, replace everything, and it will be ready for new exhaust.  The 442 already has a fresh 350 Olds (by Mike), and fresh paint by his buddy Darrell.

Bruce Robert’s 56 Chrysler wagon was about ¾ finished on his upholstery just before Xmas and looking mighty good. Could be finished by this writing.

John Stolz’s 38 Chevy 2 dr. sedan has new glass installed by King Glass out of Morristown.  It is still at Jim Bledsoe’s garage, where Jim, Jerry Collins, and Dallas Reed continue massaging the body for paint. Jim Bledsoe has graciously allowed Jerry and Dallas a Xmas vacation and has them on a snow schedule, while his shop remains without heat.

Ron and Brent Herron continue to make some progress on their LT1 powered 47 Caddy road queen.

Glen Armstrong has about finished his Chevy installation into his big comfy Lincoln 4 dr.

Kingsport Speedway 2010 UARA

Times News reporter Jeff Bobo’s  “Behind the Wheel” column  appears weekly in the  Go Tri Cities pullout  section of the Kingsport Times News paper. He writes several stories of local racers past and present. In the January 7th edition he reports that Kingsport Speedway has landed two UARA events for 2010. They are March 27th, and August l4th (birth date of a famous in his own mind hot rodder.) As reported earlier The Kingsport Speedway had a tremendous turnout last fall, and the UARA boys put on a good show.  This is one of the series training grounds for Nascar’s upper two tier series.

Geoff Bodine is involved, and I hear Glen Armstrong is planning to attend to settle old business, or maybe to get and autograph.
